Great Hucklow, Derbyshire, UK
24th July to 31st July 2010
Unitarian Experience Week takes place annually, commencing on the last Saturday in July. It is an adult residential holiday, run from the Nightingale Centre, Great Hucklow, a village in beautiful North Derbyshire. We meet to share laughter, friendship, open discussion, expand our horizons and to enjoy Summer in the Derbyshire countryside. This experience is open to all; you will find a warm welcome, a friendly, informal atmosphere with free time to explore the beauty of the Peak District. There are some forty to fifty participants, and the event is open to all, Unitarian or not. All activities are optional.
We choose a theme each year. The theme in 2009 was: 'Searching for Gold and Celebrating Golden Moments', and some previous ones have been:'Breaking the Chains that Bind?', 'You've got to have a Dream', and 'Searching for the Salmon of Knowledge'.
The theme in 2010 is 'REACHING FOR THE HIGH NOTES – To STRIVE, to SEEK, to FIND… THE POSITIVES IN LIFE'
Presently the structure is to have three theme speakers, each of whom speaks during a morning session on a subject related to the theme. We aim to have people from three different disciplines, and not necessarily with any connections to the Unitarian movement. We also have several workshop sessions in smaller groups, and walking, art and crafts, music, dance and literature-based activities.
First thing in the morning and late in the evening there are short gatherings in which participants are able to lead meditations, story-telling, worship, and other presentations aimed to give spiritual uplift.
Planning for UEW commences in September of the previous year. Information is sent out to people on our mailing list and to all Unitarian congregations in about March.
